Step 1: Measure Length and Width
Use a tape measure to find the length and width of each section. Measure the longest and widest points for accuracy. Write down these measurements in feet.
Step 2: Multiply Length by Width
For each section, multiply the length by the width.
Length (in feet) x width (in feet) = Area in square feet.
For example, if a room is 40 feet long and 35 feet wide, the square footage is 1400 square feet (40 ft × 35 ft) = 1400 square feet.
Step 3: Add Up the Sections
Add the square footage of all sections to get the total for the entire floor. If you have multiple rooms, repeat the process for each and then add them together.
Step 4: Allow for Extra Material
To be safe, add 5-10% to your total. This accounts for cuts, mistakes, and unexpected issues during installation.
Step 5: Convert Units if Needed
If your measurements are in a different unit (like square meters), convert them to square feet using the right conversion factor.
Measuring your space is a breeze with these simple steps. Doing it right ensures you buy the perfect amount of flooring, avoid waste, and make your project a success. Take a few minutes to measure, and you’ll be all set for a beautiful new floor!
